WIMBLEDON – After all these years, why climb a mountain in the usual manner?

The bigger thrill is in trying a different route, which might help explain why Novak Djokovic, short on inspiration and titles for much of 2024, is back to crackling with energy and desire.

He has won Wimbledon seven times, won 24 major titles in all, but he has never won any trophy a few weeks after knee surgery. The challenge and the tight timeline, with no room for error or human frailty, seem to have narrowed his focus and got him back to zoning in and locking down on the big points, just like the good old days.

There have been so many of those here at the All England Club and elsewhere for the 37-year-old Djokovic, the most prolific winner of prestige singles titles in the history of men’s tennis.

Complacency has rarely been an option.
